Jamaica is the third largest island in the Greater Antilles and the largest English speaking territory. Jamaica lies south of Cuba and west of Haiti in the northwestern region of the Caribbean Sea and has a maximum east-west length of about 235 km (146 miles); The maximum width is about 80 km. The nation's total area is approximately 10,991 square kilometers (4,244 sq mi). Recently declared an archipelago state by the Maritime Areas Act, Jamaica's territory extends beyond its coastline and includes some 66 islands, rocks and coves.
The island is divided into three counties: Cornwall, Middlesex and Surrey and is divided into 14 parishes: Kingston, St. Andrew, St. Catherine, Clarendon, Manchester, St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland, Hannover, St. James, Trelawny, St. Ann, St.Maria, Portland and Santo Tomas. Each parish has a capital city, which is usually the center of commerce, and two parish capitals, Montego Bay in St. James and Kingston, have city status. Kingston, located on the southeastern tip of the island, is the capital of Jamaica.
